Description

This is the Queen of Sheba History Map

The First Step was the Thumbnails. I knew the basic shape of the layout and the composition that I wanted going into this one straight off. A pretty girl surrounded by a family of lions, and heaps of rich fabric and jewelry.
Thumbnail #1, I generally hit what I wanted in the first thumbnail, but thought to lessen the directness of her stare to a softer gaze. I liked that her hand played with her headdress.
Thumbnail #2, I flopped it to redraw with the changes I had in mind to see if it would read in reverse just as well.
Thumbnail #3, I realized I liked the original layout better, but I did like the addition of the arm reaching out to touch the lions mane. The 3/4 face was fine too, but the placement was not very relaxed. So I combined all the features I liked in the drawing.

The Second Step was the Pencil Drawing. I worked this drawing till I got it right with all the final poses of the characters. I needed dead non character space for the type on the extreme left of the art, so I filled it with other elements of wealth...like food. Fruit was the better choice. I was inspired by Ancient Persian tile patterns for the background wall.

The Third Step was the Tonal Study. This was done in photoshop. It enabled me to decide the liht source, and how to distribute that light over this busy scene. I also wanted to make sure that the Queen would not be upstaged by the lions. It was at this point that I detailed the fabric she was laying on, with the camel design.

The Fourth Step not shown was the color rough. It was very small, the size of a postal stamp, but it clearly presented the over color themes that would bind this all together. The main colors are the golds yellows and mustards/browns that define the lions jewelry and the major part of the background. The warmer pinks oranges and reds created the base. The cooler greens were brought in to work with the yellows, and a few spots of blue were brought in to add sweetness to the colors.

The fifth and final step was the actual painting of the artwork. It was painted in Acrylics on Watercolor heat pressed paper. Included is a detail of the Queens face.

This is amazing! The entire picture is far, far beyond anything I could create or accomplish. Your attention to detail in creating the intricate pieces of jewelry and crown and of the eyes is astounding. When I see artwork such as this all I can do is shake my head in amazement!
