I struggled to know what to paint for my father, for his interests are vast. I decided to paint what I liked, and thought he'd like it anyway.
I decided to paint a mermaid, as mermaids have been a love of mine since childhood, and painting her as a redhead was with my favorite hair color. I included the doll to represent the doll that I sculpted and released to the collectible doll market, her name being "Elizabet Bizelle". The mermaid and the doll in my art are two things that my father would strongly recognize as loved subjects by his son.
I have the mermaid in thrall looking at the beauty of the doll, and have her hand caressing the dolls legs, as she being a mermaid has no legs, but a tail, and it seems there is a fascination that some mermaids have with legs.
My father loved it.

She's beautiful!! What a wonderful gift you've given. I love the look of her translucent tailfin and how you still have the form of a human rear under the beginnings of her tail scales. I do miss, however, the other fishy traits you've given your Wavedancers like the extra fins and fingerwebs. But, she's a doll just the same (yes, a play on words!)!
I like the translucent tail on a mermaid. it gives her an extra vulnerability that an opaque tail does not give (as easily). However, it is not always best to do a mermaid with such a tail, but in this instance it worked.
Yes, she is less fishy then other mermaids that I've done, but I was in a bit of a rush when I did it. I whipped it up over a weekend, a Friday and Saturday night for delivery to the birthday on the Sunday. So the design and everything else is somewhat streamlined, but as a consequence, the look is a little rougher then I'd normally allow, but I really like the look it gives, just that little more painterly.
I realized that my father would've been happy with anything, even a stick figure, so it was extra nice to see his reaction to a painting. If I'd let him, he'd clean out all my drawers of roughs and collect them into a little folder just for him, and to show to his friends. Someday maybe, he can get them, but not yet, as the old sketches sometimes do inspire new art. Every now and then he gets a batch of photocopies.
