This is the 5th page of the MerDawn story I did for Joe Linsner of his character Dawn (originally published as the back up story in issue#3 Dawn Return of the Goddess in 2000). At this time he had never done Dawn as a mermaid, and I had always wanted to do her as one. We had known each other for several years beforehand via working for the same publisher, and I had expressed interest in doing Dawn as a mermaid...someday. So it came about that Joe wanted to see her done by me as a mermaid, and this is one page (pg5) of the 6 page story. There is a 7th page, which is like a page 0 to this story, which was published separately in his Dreams of Dawn issue for Wizard.
This treatment is what I will bring to the new Elf~Fin comic/Graphic Novel I'm working on now with Julie Ditrich.
Thank you heartofglitter. Working with Joe Linsner was great, actually one of the best working experiences I've had in comics. He was very supportive of me doing the project. He did mention that I "got" Dawn in a way that others that he'd invited to do renditions of her had "not".
The really fun and nice thing was when it was reviewed, my work was apparently initially mistaken for Linsners work. I think our look is different, but i certainly saw the compliment in that.
The review is as follows:
Bud Plant Comic Art (Comic art & illustrated books): pg. 151
DAWN: Return of the Goddess #3
By Joseph Michael Linsner.
Gorgeous Linsner art, the contemporary master good girl artist. Sirius, 1999. Dawn picks up her sword again, determined to cut a bloody path to Lucifer. She hacks and slashes her way into his stronghold and demands the Prince of Lies to tell why her followers are being slain. And she discovers who's really been pulling the strings. Includes a stunning backup tale (we thought it was Linsner's work at first) by Jozef Szekeres, 1999.
lol, yes VixenVendetta, I had fun working-in the skulls (one of the many symbols normally worn by Dawn) into her new mermaid form. I call them "Skull Scales".
Glad you noticed the "scull scales". This character is Dawn, and Dawn usually wears lace that has skulls as part of the motif pattern. As my MerDawn did not wear lace, I thought it would be fun to do her scales as skulls instead. I really liked the result.
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P
