This is the 2nd panel from the 1st page of the MerDawn story I did for Joe Linsner of his character Dawn (originally published as the 6 page back up story in issue#3 Dawn Return of the Goddess in 2000). At this time he had never done Dawn as a mermaid, and I had always wanted to do her as one. We had known each other for several years beforehand via working for the same publisher, and I had expressed interest in doing Dawn as a mermaid...someday. So it came about that Joe wanted to see her done by me as a mermaid. There is a 7th page, which is like a page 0 to this story, which was published separately in his Dreams of Dawn issue for Wizard.
Dawns' scales are little skulls, so she has SkullScales. Her fins are like the petals of a red rose.
This treatment is what I will bring to the new Elf~Fin comic/Graphic Novel I'm working on now with Julie Ditrich.
I'll attempt oils soon, just not familiar with them as yet, and nothing is more fearful then the unknown..lol
I've looked at Tim Hildebrandts book to understand color and the values of light and shade, he has plenty to say that is like taking personal lessons with him. it's a great book to have. I love his brothers paintings too, Greg's work is "hotter" then Tims, but all you need to know he shows you in his art. Any artists work that you look at will reveal some technique, it's then up to us to apply that lesson as we learn. So get any book of any artist that you admire, all the lessons are there in the art.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

This is in Acrylics, wet on wet on Watercolor paper heat-pressed 185gm. I'd love to try oils, just not been brave enough yet.
I just bought a beginner set. Any hints or "book to read" for me?
Dont think you need to be brave - you just CAN DO!
